Is using a proxy at school legal?
I got caught using a program called utlra surf to bypass the blocks for websites like youtube and myspace and the principal told me that was illegal and suspended me for 3 days. is it realy illiegal? I mean i knew it was against school rules but i dont want to break any laws.
Refer to my blog post at http://daileymuse.com/2009/01/accessing-youtube-is-a-crime for links to web sites related to criminal hacking and the law.
No, it is not illegal, but it does violate their acceptable use policies for the computer/network. It would be illegal to break “in” to their network, not break “out” of it, as you did.
If you knew it was against the rules, and did it anyway, you deserved the suspension. You won’t go to jail but you may not be getting any high-paying IT jobs when you grow up if you have many of these types of offenses on your record. More companies are checking the criminal backgrounds (and some, where security clearances are concerned, are checking school records) of their prospective employees. If you ever get something like this on your record it won’t look good.
