What is the best way to ask for a discount?

So, Im goona use all my savings to buy an musical instrument. So, lets say…in a place like SAM ASH, how would ask for a discout?
Talking to the manager?
Being honest by saying you cant afford the whole price?

My motto has always been, “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.” So the very first step in getting a discount is to ask for one. In these tough economic times, most retailers are willing to give back a little to make a sale. Some retailers are willing to throw in a small complimentary accessory item. First, know what it is you want.

This technique works for me with most large purchases:

1. Make friends with the sales associate. Be courteous, patient, and friendly. It helps if they like you.
2. When you’ve settled on the exact item that you’re sure you’re going to buy, ask the sales associate “What’s the best deal you can give me on this?” and wait for their answer. Most often, they’ll say something like, “I can take 10% off for you.” At which point, you can say, “Gee, that’s really pushing my budget. Can you do 15%?” If not, and they say, “It’s already priced as low as I can go.” You can either ask to speak to a manager, or ask if they’d be willing to throw in a small accessory, like a guitar strap or whatever else might be something you’d like with your new instrument.
3. If you find the item priced elsewhere for less, before you make your purchase, bring a photo of the item with its price, or advertisement where you saw it priced lower (even if it’s online), with you to the store. Many stores will match or beat a lower-price offered by its competition, if you can show proof.
