I play piano with a band, and they give me lyrics sheets with chord progressions…?
… and I do just fine banging away on the chords (playing just the octave with my left hand in the bass), but I’m tired of playing just the chords. What else is there to do? I just don’t know how to make it more interesting.
Try arpeggiating the chords (playing each note in the chord individually rather than at the same). It gives it a little more flavor, as well as more possibilities. For example, you may start with a root for one chord, but start with a third on the next chord. As for the bass line, playing the root should do, but you could also experiment with mimicking the bass guitar riff (if you have a bass in your band). Just make sure the rest of your band doesn’t drown you out, or you drown out another instrument.
