Can my guitar be fixed?
I was recently given my dad’s old guitar. Its a nice Fender acoustic, but my older brother has been taking to open mic nights and other gigs over the past year or two, and has messed it up a bit. It still plays nicely, most of the stuff is just cometic. There are several large chips, a small crack, and the varnished is cracked in a few places and is rubbing off in others. Needless to sat he didn’t take good care of it. Can these chips be filled in? Can I revarnish it or fix the old varnish? Keep in mind that it needs to be done on the budget of a college student. Off the bat Yes. Well that depends on how sentimental you are over this guitar. Fender acoustics aren’t usually highly collected but that doesn’t mean anything. How much does it mean to you is the question. I would start by finding out what the guitar is worth to see if it is worth fixing. When you get into cosmetic work on a guitar you can sometimes buy a new and possibly better guitar for what low to middle end guitars cost. There are quick fixes for cracks and chips but they are not high quality. If you are going to fix it and just keep it for sentimental reasons. Again it will depend on how much you want to spend. A guitar luthier can charge from $20-30$ per chip up to $600 to refinish the guitar. Here is my suggestion: for temporary purposes if you are wanting to keep the guitar two things can work great for repairing chips…fingernail polish or superglue. In your case I would probably try the superglue. Here is what you do.
Fill the chips with a bead of the superglue until it is higher than the finish of the guitar. Careful to not do to much so it doesn’t run down the guitar. Let the bead dry for 24 hrs. Once dry take a razor blade and cut it to the height of the finish “careful” you may scratch the guitar. Once you have it roughly level goto autozone and purchase some 200, 300, and 500 wet dry sand paper that is even grit and some polishing compound.
Now wet sand (just get the paper wet and keep it wet) the spots circular right at the edge of the finish until it is smooth. Do this with all three sand papers. Now take the polishing compound and hand rub it until it is close enough to the original finish shine. This wont be exact but it does the job. As far as the crack in the guitar if it is around the bridge it may not be to easy. If your confident enough you can try the super glue with a reinforcing popcycle stick going across the crack on the inside. You can also try the superglue on the outside but if your not careful that could become very messy. A luthier would have a brace jack to work with guitar clamps and it would be okay. It also maybe something you can just leave temporarily until you can afford a luthier. Using the polishing compound on the whole guitar will remove fine scratches but I don’t recommend you do it to much. Old paint will flake and chip sometimes and if it is collectible you want to keep it as original as possible which means I wouldn’t do any of this. I would take it to a luthier when I could afford to. Were back to how much it’s really worth to you. I hope this helps.
