Manual Video Lessons Guitar

Hey.. how hard is it to play a guitar?

I am super un co-ordinated. Im surprised I can drive a manual car. Haha.. So how hard is it to learn the guitar. And does anyone know any good places for guitar lessons in Perth? Like where the people are super friendly and wont laugh at my begginnerness :) I really like the sound. I tried learning it once but I really sucked! Haha… I was hoping I could learn it and then I could make some youtube videos and start singing again :)
Aww.. thanks for the first two answers! You guys are really nice :)

Hi Tabby.

If you find someone ridiculing a beginner, that is either because they are totally mean about anything and anyone, or they are plain and simple envious.

I have met so many musicians over the years – many of them world class – and they are always supportive an nice, as long as you’re serious about learning, nice yourself and not just some freaky star stalker or something :-)

We all remember (at least partially) how it was starting out with guitar and you will find most people both able and willing to help out – here at Y!A or in real life.

That said, not all sorts of teaching or advice may be directly beneficial to you in the sort and long term. Some beginners just wade right into the free stuff at places like youtube.com and try one thing after the other without any real plan, structure – and certainly making them wast a heap of valuable time.

The best is of course to get a dedicated teacher. This will ensure you get the basics down and that you get the techniques right from the get go. It is so easy to pick up bad habits! As for teaching in your local area, use the yellow pages or search engines, for instance “learn guitar+Perth” “guitar teacher+Perth” or similar is bound to get you a number of hits. Try to search with as well as without the quotes…

The second best thing is probably to get into one of the better online courses. You can find some recommended ones at the following site as well as some lessons about playing barre chords, strumming, the importance of getting your guitar properly adjusted, as well as more. Even though it is mainly geared at electric guitar, the principles are the same for acoustics: http://learnelectricguitarnow.net

There are also a few quite good free online sites. The best is without a doubt http://justinguitar.com – a great player with lots of good advice and lessons.

Just remember, take your time! Don’t rush things and never give up. Being really good at playing guitar can take years and years, but the effort is always worth it :-)

And one final piece of advice. Do not get an acoustic nylon string guitar (called classical guitar), unless you mainly plan on playing classical or purely finger style acoustic singer/songwriter stuff. Despite what some folks claim, these guitars are harder to play than a steel string acoustic or electric guitar which has been properly adjusted.

There are several reasons which makes the nylon string guitars harder to play even though the strings themselves are softer: String action (height), neck width and neck scale (longer scale= longer distance between frets and higher tension) being the three most prominent ones.

Best of luck to you!
