Moving from Acoustic to Electric guitar, how much should I spend?
Hiya,
Basically, I’ve been playing guitar for about 5 months now on an acoustic guitar with steel strings. By october, my parents have said they will put some money towards an electric, as have my grandparents, and I will chip in whatever I have saved by then.
I’ve heard electric is easier than acoustic, especially if you are used to the strings on an acoustic guitar, so as a side note, I was wondering if this could affect my technique somewhat in playing an easier instrument?
But my main question is how much should I spend on an electric guitar. I normally play for about 30 minutes a night out of enjoyment, but whenever I have a boring day at home it will normally be around 3 hours or so, so I will get a lot of use out of it. Is it worth forking out a lot now for a guitar and not later on, or should I stick with something cheap?

If you already know you enjoy playing guitar as you stated and don’t think it is something you are going to give up on then I would say that you should probably spend a bit more and get yourself a decent guitar to start off with. You will not regret it. The Gibson SG is a great guitar and you can get a brand new one for 700 bucks at Guitar Center.

You could save yourself some cash by finding a decent used guitar on craigslist as well. Don’t just rush into a sale though. Do some research on what guitars guys are using for the style of music you are most looking to play and talk to people at your local Guitar Center or other guitar shop and ask what there preferences are. I have always been really fond of Schecter guitars. You can pick up a new Schecter Omen 6 for about 300 bucks I believe. It is not their top of the line guitar but sounds great and plays very smooth.
