Music theory can be an intimidating subject to tackle, but it is something that all beginners must understand if they are serious about learning how to play the guitar. One can play a guitar – or any instrument – well by ear or by heart, but precision and good technique can only be achieved with comprehension of even just the basics of music theory. If you are just starting out with your guitar lessons, though, you do not have to worry. There are easy guitar tabs that you can use for studying how to read sheet music and practicing on your music theory.
A guitar tablature, or guitar tab for short, is similar to the staff notations used in studying music. However, instead of standard notation with trebles, clefs and such, you get to see numbers and letters on guitar tabs, along with a few simple symbols. Not only do these numbers and letters make it easier for beginners to read and understand a tab, but it is also more precise in that guitar students will be able to know which strings to press and where on the fret board should they place their fingers when playing chords.
Reading A Guitar Tab
It may be confusing at first, but reading these tabs is actually simpler than it looks. The six horizontal lines on the tab represent the six strings of the classical acoustic guitar. Each string, as you may know, is assigned a letter corresponding to the notes it can sound, from the lowermost string to the highest: low E, A, D, G, B and high E.
The vertical lines, on the other hand, indicate the frets on the neck of the guitar. The solidly colored circles on the horizontal lines show which strings you should press on and on which fret. If the circle is open, it means the string should not be played. A tab may also have other symbols to indicate how your hand should move along the fret board to produce the notes for the chord.
Practicing With Guitar Tabs
If you are a beginner, it will help you a lot if you practice playing your guitar with actual guitar tabs. Not only does practice make perfect, but it will also aid you in understanding how the notes flow and how the melody is created on the guitar. In turn, reading and practicing with guitar tabs will make you develop an instinct for how notes are played on the guitar.
You do not have to worry about finding easy guitar tabs to practice on. You can download tabs for free on the Internet. Examples of great guitar tabs that you can work on without much difficulty are “Day Tripper” and “Fool on the Hill” by The Beatles, “Paint It Black” and “Satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones, “All Apologies” and “Come As You Are” by Nirvana, and “Yellow” and “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face” by Coldplay. As long as you understand how these tabs are read and practice every single day, it will not be long before you good at playing the guitar and even have the confidence to take on music theory more seriously.
