Can someone give me tips on learning electric guitar?
I have a Gibson Les Paul which my dad gave me bout a year ago. I have been learning bits of songs that I like but its not getting me anywhere. I try to learn chords but just gie up with them as they seem pointless COMPARED to TAB. I practice about 30 minutes minimum a day but I am not improving. Im 16, I use medium guage plectrums and have a small beginner amp. My guitar is nicely tuned and my influences on music and lyric styles are My Chemical Romance, Guns N Roses, Metallica, Nirvana, 30 Seconds to Mars, Breaking Benjamin, Rage against the machine, Muse etc. Im young so my bands may differ from yours. Please, I need someone with experience on guitar to possibly give me stage lessons on what i should practice and learn so I can master my skill and technique efficiently. Because I pretty much suck at guitar at the moment, I want it to change because I hope to go in a band someday.
Well you are lucky to have a Les Paul to learn to play on, my first guitar was a strat knock-off. You say you are not getting better. I would disagree. Start by recording what you are doing now ,a cheap tape player will do. Then keep practicing and go back later and listen to what you did back then. You will be surprised. Playing everyday is a must but you get so close you don’t see the improvement. Learn to read music, tab is good for some tough stuff and when you can’t get sheet music. Learn all the chords you can they will be the basis for lead patterns you will use later. Really good lead players are even better rhythum players. Like suggested above most guitar shops give lessons go in and ask, that will give you incentive to work toward the next lesson after a while you will have a arsenal of techniques that apply to all kinds of music. Personally I dig EVH and his style and use it in Our worship music and in a rock band. Find yourself a guitar hero and find out how he plays, it worked for me. None of those you mentioned got where they are overnight, practice,practice and more practice. I still do it everyday.never stop learning
