Joe Henderson has been called a supreme melody of a composer of the music, a music astronaut other jazz musician, and a few privileged to be called teacher. Two of my teachers took saxophone lessons from him in San Francisco and I heard good stories about him.
Joe Henderson truly epitomizes the greatness of music, played the saxophone, drums, piano, flute and bass and to excel in the composition. He was listening sax Jazz Lester Young, Flip Phillips, Stan Getz, Lee Konitz and Charlie Parker to his brothers dish that Henderson found his greatest inspiration.
A mid- fifty, before he was even old enough to start school, Henderson was active in the Detroit jazz scene and has performed with many celebrities visiting New York. When you do go to college, had transcribed and memorized a series of stunning solos of Lester Young. This impressive, in fact, that teachers have that elusive power known as absolute pitch.
Joe entered the U.S. Army in 1960 and entered a talent contest with an army quartet combined. The group gained the first place, and the victory gives Henderson a chance to tour the world entertaining the troops. He stayed in the Army for two years, leaving in 1962. That same year, recorded the biggest hit of his career, with help from trumpeter Kenny Dorham. The song was called snap my fingers and reached number 8 in the pop charts and # 5 in the charts slightly.
A few years later, this time as a sideman in the band of Horace Silver, Henderson could help his saxophone style to another successful album, song for my father. Joe plays solo after piano. After leaving the band of silver in 1966, Henderson was co-leader of a big band with Dorham. His arrangements for this band not recorded until 1996 with the release of the album Joe Henderson Big Band.
Joe has also performed as a freelancer during this period and played in several large disks, like Herbie Hancock, The Prisoner and Andrew Black Fire Hills and Album starting point. In 1967, he played briefly with Miles Davis, however, none of these shows were recorded. Also in 1967, signed with the progress log and began to experiment more with the latest techniques, electronic effects and a study of the addition. In this new stage of his career titles song and the album shows a social conscience.
Joe Henderson had a brief stint with Blood, Sweat and Tears in 1971, before moving to San Francisco and focuses on education. Continued practice in the 1980's, mostly as a leader, but sometimes as companions Banda Chick Korea and Griffith Park. In the eighties, which brought together more than reinterpretation of classic jazz in the strength and hard work of writing new music. In 1986, when jazz is facing a resurgence, Henderson published a volume of two discs, the state of the tenor. It featured Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on drums.
Verve Records has taken note of it in the late 1990 and produced their 1992 comeback album exuberant Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn. The album, with a wide marketing campaign on behalf of The Verve, Henderson firmly in the forefront of the jazz scene. The album was followed by a tribute album to Miles Davis and Henderson version Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess by George.
